Get a Quote →Lake Macquarie is Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake — 110 square kilometres of navigable water with over 170 kilometres of foreshore. Thousands of private jetties, pontoons and boat ramps line its shores, and the combination of salt water, wave fetch across the open lake and soft muddy substrate creates specific maintenance challenges.
The lake's restricted tidal exchange through Swansea Channel means water sits longer against timber, accelerating rot in the splash zone. Borer activity is present but less intense than in open harbour environments. The bigger issue on Lake Macquarie is pile settlement — the soft alluvial mud on the western shore around Wangi Wangi, Toronto and Rathmines allows piles to gradually sink, pulling structures out of level.
Repairs here need to account for these lake-specific conditions: deeper pile embedment, stiffer cross-bracing to handle wave fetch, and splash-zone protection wraps on pile heads where rot hits first.
Remove settled or rotted piles and drive new H6-treated hardwood into Lake Macquarie's variable substrate. Cost per pile depends on depth and access, and rises again where piles have to go into rock.
Replace weathered decking, re-level bearers on settled structures and upgrade all fixings to 316 stainless steel for long-term salt-water performance.

With 170 km of foreshore, many Lake Macquarie jetties have limited road access. Enquiries are welcome from all arms of the lake — from Belmont and Marks Point in the south to Warners Bay and Valentine in the north, and across to the western shore at Wangi Wangi, Toronto and Rathmines.
The NSW Government's estuary profile calls Lake Macquarie Australia's largest coastal saltwater lake, with a permanently open, trained entrance at Swansea. Tides on the main lake are small: Manly Hydraulics Laboratory's 2001–2020 tidal planes analysis (Report MHL2786, April 2023) gives a mean range of about 10 cm at Belmont and Marmong Point, against about 67 cm in Swansea Channel. Around the main lake there is no low-tide window for pile or bearer work.
Deck height hangs off one lake-wide mark. Lake Macquarie DCP 2014 (Part 9, adopted November 2024) takes the lake's mean high water as +0.132 m AHD and requires a jetty's finished surface to sit 600 to 750 mm above it. Council's Waterway Flooding and Tidal Inundation Policy (Version 4, 2020) puts the 1-in-100-year lake flood at 1.86 m AHD, including 0.4 m of sea level rise by 2050. In that flood, a deck built to the DCP would sit about a metre under water, so ask how the decking is held down, not just how high it sits.
The same part of the DCP caps length at the shorter of the run to 1.5 m of water at the jetty end or 30 m from mean high water. A job here does not have to plan around oyster leases or marine park zones. NSW DPIRD's aquaculture data, checked in September 2026, records no recognised oyster aquaculture sites in the lake, and NSW marine protected areas data shows no marine park or aquatic reserve over it.

Manly Hydraulics Laboratory's figures give the channel a mean tidal range of 0.673 m, against 0.100 m at Belmont.
